Quick tips to help you Memorise the Qur'aan

By Sheikh Muhammed Alshareef

Below are some quick tips that will help you in memorizing the Qur`ân:

1. You absolutely must have a teacher. Do NOT memorize on your own. You must have a teacher who you respect and whom you fear. Don't ask "how" to memorize the Qur`ân. Ask where you can find the best teacher. The teacher will then guide you on the "how."

2. Distractions. In memorizing the Qur`ân, you must free your mind and environment of distractions. Imagine trying to memorize at a football game? Tough, huh? How about a theme park, could you sit down and control yourself to memorize? Probably not. Getting into a Qur`ân Hifdh (memorization of Qur`ân) program with a teacher and discipline will assist you in creating the perfect atmosphere for memorization.

3. Memorize through Audio. A lot of people think they are memorizing the "look" of the Mushaf, but actually you are memorizing the "sound" of verses. When I review, I record my recitation on CD and listen to it again and again. The students that read the loudest in class are all the strongest students. Why? Because they can hear themselves the most?

When I was in Qur`ân school, the boy beside me read so loud. I asked the teacher to ask him to read more quietly. He said a most powerful statement that became my motto: "No, you read louder" I did and it benefited me unbelievably.

4. Location of the Mushaf. Your eyes follow a specific direction depending on what you are thinking or doing. If you are lying, your eyes go left. If you are remembering something visual, like where you left your keys, your eyes will look upwards.

When you memorize, the direction of memorization is right and left, not downwards. The mistake I see people make is that they put their mushaf low on the ground and then try to memorize. In order to fully harness the power of your mind, you must keep the mushaf at eye level, and not dip your head...

5. Eat brain food. We've all heard the advice of uncles that you have to eat Badams (almonds) to improve memory. Well, I'm here to tell you that the uncles were right! The food you eat, the drinks you drink, directly affect your ability to excel in memorization of the Qur`ân.

Do not eat fatty, unhealthy food. Do not drink soda. Eat a nutritious light breakfast, a nutritious light lunch, with almonds for snacks during the day. Subhan Allah, you will find you accomplish much more in your day.

6. Make everyday a victory. You can move a mountain rock by rock. Enjoy every page you memorize, every verse.

I am often asked about my secret to memorizing the Qur`ân. They are expecting me to teach them a special "south-beach-hifdh-diet" or something. (I call it tip shopping, they are expecting a specific tip). I say again and again, there is no doubt that there are three ingredients. If you have these three ingredients, you will accomplish what you set out for:

a. Du’a, supplication (you must always reflect your desire to Allah).

b. Sabr, patience (it will be a testing path, fill your bags with Sabr powerbars).

c. Taqwa, protecting yourself from sin.

If you do not remember anything from this article except these three ingredients (DST: Du’a, Sabr, Taqwa - DST) then, bi idhnillah, it will suffice.

The Quran and the Modern Manager

By Gracious Creation

Allaah (swt) has made some people better in work than others. He has raised them to positions of power out of His mercy.

[043:032]..We raised some of them above others in ranks, so that some may employ others in their work…

But being in a position of power and authority is also a huge responsibility and a trial for the person.

The Righteous Khulafaah like Abu Bakr(rah), Umar(rah) understood this and many examples can be taken from their lives about how they performed in their office and took care of the people under them. For them always the Quran and the Sunnah took precedence, and then the consensus of the scholars.

But in today’s corporate world, where many of the Muslims are working in executive positions, how many actually follow the Quran and the Sunnah in their day to day decision making?

If there are some executives out there who feel they are in the category above, maybe the following points from the Quran on management would change their mind and enable them to use the Quran more often in your offices, inshaAllah:

  1. Obedience and Respect for Authority: Allaah (swt) orders us in the Quran to follow the Prophet and the people who are in authority among us:

[004:059] O you who believe! Obey Allâh and obey the Messenger (Muhammad [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam]), and those of you (Muslims) who are in authority….

If a believer has this aayat in mind when he or she goes to work everyday, then how high would the level of obedience be? Obedience and respect for authority is the basic requisite for getting work done by someone. If your subordinates below you are not delivering the work, see if there are any shortcomings from your side because this may lead them to perceive that you hold less authority over them.

  2. Working and consulting as a team: When was the last time you involved your subordinates and team members in making a decision on a project? If you have not, is it because you feel that you know more than the people around you? Seeking advice from the people around you would be one of the best things you can do when faced with a dilemma. Umar (rah) himself had a council of the Sahabaah with him who he consulted (Shura) for decisions. As Allaah swt states:

[003:159] …so pass over (their faults), and ask (Allâh’s) forgiveness for them; and consult them in the affairs. Then when you have taken a decision, put your trust in Allâh, certainly, Allâh loves those who put their trust (in Him).

  3. Providing Equal Opportunities: Providing Equal Opportunities: Islam is not a religion just for one race or one kind of people. It is a religion for the whole mankind. Allaah (swt) says:

[049:013] O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allâh is that (believer) who has At-Taqwâ [i.e. he is one of the Muttaqûn (the pious)]. Verily, Allâh is All-Knowing, Well-Acquainted (with all things).

The only thing that differentiates people is their righteousness! Subhanallah! If this policy alone is implemented in the workplace, then every person would have the same equal opportunities and only based on his or her hard work and effort would a person go ahead.

  4. Motivation and Commitment: Since you are a manager or lead a team, you must know motivating the people under under you to achieve goals is a huge task and one which is not done efficiently. Corporate trainings are conducted regularly for instilling motivation in the employees. And after the short burst of motivation, the employee has to be given a training once more. Allaah (swt) says to the Prophet:

[003:159] And by the Mercy of Allâh, you (Muhammad [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam]) dealt with them gently. And had you been severe and harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from about you; so pass over (their faults), and ask (Allâh’s) forgiveness for them; and consult them in the affairs. Then when you have taken a decision, put your trust in Allâh, certainly, Allâh loves those who put their trust (in Him).

The best way to motivate people is in the way you deal with them. Even the Prophet is being commanded to deal with the people under him gently, then how much more so for us? Apart from being gentle with your team members another important aspect is looking over their faults. Taking some small problem and blowing it out of proportion is becoming the norm. Being harsh over the people is not the answer to achieving common goals and if everyone has to survive, there has to be leniency from the part of the one who is in authority. Remember, you grow if your team grows.

  5. Less Wastage of resources: Bad planning which leads to wastage of physical and human resources is one of the banes of the corporate world today. Offices have numerous standards and work flows which streamline usage of resources and try to make us utilize them effectively. But perhaps something much more is required to motivate the people in using the resources allocated to them efficiently:

[017:026] And give to the kinsman his due and to the Miskîn (needy) and to the wayfarer. But spend not wastefully (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift. [Tafsir At-Tabarî (Verse 9:60)]

[017:027] Verily, the spendthrifts are brothers of the Shayâtîn (devils), and the Shaitân (Devil-Satan) is ever ungrateful to his Lord.

The above aayats, although mentioning about money, also come into use for physical and human resources. Both cost money and a huge amount of effort goes into building them up for use. This makes more sense with the point mentioned below.

  6. Overworking the people: A manager should know that different people have different capacities towards work. If one is able to slog it out for 12 hours a day, there maybe others who can barely make it to the 8 hour mark. Managers have become notorious to burdening the employees with tasks beyond their capabilities. Allaah (swt) says regarding this:

[002.232]..No person shall have a burden laid on him greater than he can bear…

Balancing out the workload onto different employees based on their skill set and capacity will ensure that none of them are over-burdened and everyone works towards achieving their common goal.]

  7. Fulfilling contracts and promises: Today it is a norm for companies to over promise a customer and deliver under pressure. Everyone suffers because of this, from the employee to the manager. And if the deadline is not met [there is a reason it is called a DEADLINE Smile], the customer either fines or sues the company. Committing to a deal without knowing the actual effort and time it will take is detrimental to the working atmosphere of a company. It eats into the work spirit around the company and forces people into believing that there is nothing other than work in life. To run a successful company and to always have a motivated team around you, one must not make promises that cannot be kept.

[061:002] O you who believe! Why do you say that which you do not do?

[061:003] Most hateful it is with Allâh that you say that which you do not do.

Whether you are a manager with a team under you or a senior executive managing different departments, keep the above points in mind the next time you manage the people around you. Even if you are an employee, most of the points above are relevant for you in terms of boosting your morale at your workplace.

But above all this, have trust in Allaah (swt) in all the decision you make. Make fervent du’a to Him. Make Istikharah whenever you have to make a decision, even if it be as small as selecting the right candidate for the job.

May Allah (swt) enable all people in authority and senior positions to carry out their tasks on the lines of the Quran and the Sunnah.

Tears become droplets, tears become puddles and then become an ocean as I ponder upon these emotional words:

Say: "The Angel of Death, put in charge of you, will (duly) take your souls: then shall you be brought back to your Lord. (32:11)

Watery tears as deep as an ocean flow down my innocent face and dry on my lips. As my heart locks on the pages of the Quran. Balanced between hope, by Allah's mercy. And between fear, by Allah's wrath. The Quranic wisdom takes me on an unforgettable journey through the Islamic history, to life's mystery. Full of knowledge to the depths of the root.In the quitness of my vivid thoughts burning the current's path into a deeper frame of emotion.Patient tears flowed up on an endless crevice. Allah counts my tears, one by one.The Holy Quran is True Beauty with imagination of radiant light which illumines the deeper depths of my soul.Conveying a revolutionary message which transforms my soul towards Jannah. As I go to close the Quran, my heart feels regret, like a loved one gone. A liked one on. On infinite friendship. Strong attachment stays within. iPOET and Quran.A beautiful couple and garment to one another. Closeness like no other. The Quran will be my witness of the Day Of Judgement.

When is your Quranic Moment O Dear Friend?

Do You Cry When YOU Read The Powerful Message?

Who's Words are the Quran?

Qur'an - The Delight of the Heart

Allaah, the Exalted, revealed the Quran, to be a beacon of light that cannot be extinguished. It is a methodology and way of life that is perfect in all respects. In it is strength that cannot be equaled or repelled. It is the foundation of Eemaan (Faith) and the spring of knowledge. Allaah willed that the Quran be what quenches the thirst for knowledge. It is the delight of the people of wisdom. The Quran is the greatest cure for all ailments. It is Allaah's Rope that cannot be severed. It is the Wise Reminder and the truly Straight Path.

In the Quran are the parables of those who were before us, a prophesy of that which will be after us and a criterion to judge between us. It is Truth with certainty that was revealed to us. The one who lives according to its dictations will be rewarded. The one who judges according to it will be just. The one who calls to it is on the Straight Path. Allaah raises and lowers people's status based on their adherence to it. The Quran, on the Day of Judgment, will intercede on behalf of those who recited it.

Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "The one who reads a single letter from the Book of Allaah will be rewarded with one good deed. (Know that) A good deed is multiplied ten times over. I do not say Alif Laam Meem is one letter. Verily, Alif is one letter, Laam is one letter, Meem is one letter." [At-Tirmithi]

The Book of Allaah to mankind's guidance is like the soul in relation to the body. Therefore, he who abandons its recitation and does not act in accordance to its laws is in a state of spiritual death. Allaah Almighty says (what means): "And is one who was dead and We gave him life and made for him light by which to walk among the people like one who is in darkness, never to emerge there from?" [Quran 6:122]

A person without Quran is like a person without water, air and medicine. Allaah, the Most Exalted, says (what means): "And We send down of the Quran, that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss." [Quran 17:82]

The Quran is a healing for the body and the soul. Whenever life becomes hard and complicated, the Light of the Quran will always brighten the way. It will be a source of solace and tranquility. It will be a defender to you when you are powerless and in need. When the Muslim recites the Quran, he will feel matchless tranquility in his heart and being. This causes him only to fear Allaah alone.

Allaah Almighty says (what means):

"Those to whom people [i.e. hypocrites] said, “Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them.” But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, “Sufficient for us is Allaah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs.” So they returned with favor from Allaah and bounty, no harm having touched them. And they pursued the pleasure of Allaah, and Allaah is the Possessor of great bounty. That is only Satan who frightens [you] of his supporters. So fear them not, but fear Me, if you are [indeed] believers." [Quran 3:173-175]

Sadly, many have not taken this Quran into consideration and have neglected its recitation and implementation. They sought the worldly life and neglected the Hereafter. Allaah says (what means):

"And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allaah. They follow not except assumption, and they are not but falsifying." [Quran 6:116]

Tragically, there are those who recite the Quran in its entirety and finish with little more than with what they began with in terms of contemplation and action. Some are so concerned with how they sound, they beautify their voice without ever listening to what is being ordered or prohibited. Truly, there are many reciters of the Quran that the Quran is free from them and their evil. They recite the Quran and are oppressive to themselves and others by not following its orders or forbidding its prohibitions.

Nothing is more valuable to a Muslim in his worldly life and in the Hereafter than reciting the Quran and reflecting and trying to comprehend its meaning. In doing so, an individual will become acquainted with what is good and what is evil. He will see the effects of disobedience of Allaah and its punishment in the parables of those who have come before us. An example of such a punishment is the flood that was sent upon the people of Nooh (Noah) may Allaah exalt his mention and others similar to it. It is a source of inspiration and it strengthens one's belief in Allaah. For this reason, Allaah says (what means):

" … and when His (Allaah's) verses (Quran) are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely." [Quran 8:2]

This Book was sent and revealed from above the seven Heavens so that it could be comprehended and implemented, it is not just to be recited while the heart is pre-occupied. Allaah Almighty says (what means):

"[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad, sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded." [Quran 38:29]

What has happened to our hearts? Why are our hearts locked out and unresponsive to the Quran? Why do the words enter from one ear and exit out the other? Why have our hearts hardened? Let us comprehend the Quran and implement it in our lives. Let us be from those who implement the Quran in our days and recite it during our nights.

Neglecting the Glorious Qur'an

It is recommended for every believing man and woman to recite the Book of Allaah, the Noble Quran, often, with due contemplation and understanding. This may be done by using a copy of the Quran or from one's memory. Allaah - the Most High – Says (what means): "[This is] a blessed Book (the Quran) which We have revealed to you [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded." [Quran 38:29] And:

"Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allaah (the Quran) and establish prayer and spend [in His cause] out of what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, [can] expect a transaction [i.e. profit] that will never perish. That He may give them in full their rewards and increase for them of His bounty. Indeed, He is Forgiving and Appreciative."[Quran 35:29-30]

The aforementioned recitation of the Quran includes both reciting and acting upon it (abiding by what Almighty Allaah enjoins in it and refraining from what He forbids in it). The recitation is to be done with contemplation and understanding of it. Sincerity to Allaah is a means of complying with and acting upon the Quran, and its recitation contains a great reward - as the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Recite the Quran, for on the Day of Resurrection, it shall come as an intercessor for its companion (one who recites and complies by its teachings)." [Muslim]

The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) also said: "The best of you is he who learns the Quran and teaches it."[Al-Bukhaari]

Another narration states: "Whoever reads one letter of the Quran shall receive a good deed and ten good deeds similar to it. I do not say that Alif Laam Meem is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Laam is a letter and Meem is a letter." [At-Tirmithi]

The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said to Abdullaah Ibn 'Amr Ibn Al-`Aas may Allaah be pleased with him: "Complete the recitation of the Quran once a month." He ('Abdullaah) said: "I am able to do more than that, O Messenger of Allaah." So he sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Then complete its recitation once in seven days." [Al-Bukhaari]

The Companions may Allaah be pleased with them used to complete the entire Quran once every seven days.
So, it is recommended that the readers of the Quran increase their reading of it, with contemplation and understanding it, along with sincerity to Allaah - with the purpose of learning and benefiting from it. They should read the entire Quran once a month. If, however, they are able to do more than this without any difficulty, then they should complete it in less than this time.

However, it is best not to complete it in less than three days, since this is the least amount of time that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) mentioned to 'Abdullaah Ibn `Amr Ibn Al-`Aas may Allaah be pleased with him. This is because if it is read in less than three days, the person becomes hasty and lacks thought and concentration while reading it.

Allaah, the Most High, Says in the Glorious Quran (what means): "And the Messenger has said, “O my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Quran as [a thing] abandoned." [Quran: 25: 30]

So, Allaah Almighty informs us about His Messenger Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) that he said: "My Lord my people have abandoned - acting or listening - to the Quran." and that is because the idol-worshippers did not pay attention nor listen to the Quran, as Allaah Says (what means): "And those who disbelieve say, “Do not listen to this Quran and speak noisily during [the recitation of] it that perhaps you will overcome.” [Quran 41:26]

Thus, when the Quran was being read to them, they would deliberately make noise and futile speech so that they would not hear the Quran. However, this is from the ways of abandoning the Quran. Likewise, not having faith and trust in it is also from the ways of abandoning the Quran. Not pondering over it, nor trying to understand it, not acting by it, not obeying its orders and refraining from what it forbids, turning to something other than it - whether poetry, music, amusement, or other forms of vain speech and taking a path that is derived from other than the Quran are all from the ways of abandoning the Quran, of which we were strictly warned by Allaah, the Most Exalted, and His Messenger sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ).

Gems from the Treasury of the Qur'an

The Messenger of Allaah, Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "The best amongst you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.” [Al-Bukhaari]

What is the Quran?

The Quran is the Book of Allaah, which He chose to be the Final of the Heavenly Books. He, the Merciful and Most High, revealed it to Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) as the source for the Last Religion and a guidance for mankind. Its revelation was a turning point for humanity; it was the power that changed the world, shifted the flow of history, saved and reformed humanity, so much so that the entire existence appeared as if it had been recreated anew.

The Quran is the strongest evidence in support of Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and his greatest sign. It is the proof of his prophethood and trustworthiness. Allaah, the Most Exalted, Says in the Quran (what means): “They (unbelievers) want to extinguish Allaah’s light with their mouths. But Allaah will perfect His light, even though the unbelievers may detest it. It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the Religion of Truth, so that he may exalt it over all religions, much as the pagans may dislike it.” [Quran 61:8-9]

The Quran is the guidance that mankind needs to achieve freedom, happiness and success, in this life and the next.

The Quran is a complete and comprehensive Book.  It deals with the issues man needs, not only for salvation in the Hereafter, but also to achieve peace, justice and prosperity in this world.  These issues are discussed in the Quran in three main categories: Theology, Fables and Wisdom, Islamic Law (or Sharee’ah).  Thus, it provides the basic principles, vision and knowledge necessary for planning and leading a good life. All this is packaged in a very comprehensive approach to living that combines the pursuit of worldly affairs as well as those of the Hereafter. Allaah Almighty Says in the Quran (what means): “And seek by the wealth provided for you by Allaah the eternal abode (the Hereafter) but do not forget and (and forsake) your share of this world.  Be kind and good (to others) just as Allaah was kind and good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allaah does not like corrupters.” [Quran 28:77]

The Quran has an inimitable style and format that has never been seen or experienced in any other book or methodology. The richness of its text and the discourse it offers are unprecedented and unmatched in their eloquence, proficiency, fluency, conformance and harmony. Not only is the Quran a linguistic masterpiece and magnum opus par excellence, it is indeed a miracle in the fullest sense of the word. Those reciting it never become weary of it and those who ponder upon its meanings do not doubt it; rather, they always discover fresh insights and knowledge. It guides those seeking guidance and increases those who believe in it in faith. Its first parts resemble its latter parts and it can only be likened to itself in its unparalleled beauty.

The Quran is free from contradictions and those who understand the Arabic language and contemplate upon its chapters and verses will find harmony between its various parts.  Allaah, the Most High, Says (what means): “Why do not they contemplate the Quran?  And if it were from other than Allaah, they would have found in it numerous discrepancies.” [Quran 4:82]

Indeed, every time the disbelievers tried to raise issues of contradictions in the Quran, Muslim scholars proved beyond doubt that no part of the Quran belies or contradicts another. The reason is that what may appear as a 'contradiction' in the Quran is actually what the Quran calls Muhkam (clear) and Mutashaabih (unclear) verse. This is actually a part of the Quran’s textual strength and miraculous composition.

The Quran restores soul calmness

The Islamic Medical Sciences Organization declared the striking results of a study conducted by Dr. Ahmad Al-Qaadhi over a group of volunteers from USA who were subject to a recitation of the Holy Quran. A trace of a tranquilizing effect was recorded at a whole rate of 97%. Although many of these volunteers do not know Arabic, yet involuntary physiological changes that led notably to alleviate the acuity of tension they had before were observed in their nervous systems.

Furthermore, an experiment of EEG during Quran rehearsal revealed that while listening to Quran, the encephalic waves moved from the fast pattern of vigilance (12-13) wave/ second to the slow pattern (8-18) wave/ second; indicating the state of deep calmness. Non-Arabic speaking persons felt reassured, quiet, and complacent during the process of listening to Quranic verses, in spite of their inability to understand the meanings. This is one of the miracles of the Holy Quran.

The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) revealed that miracle when saying;

“No people assembled in one of the houses of Allaah (mosques), and recite and study the Book of Allaah (among themselves), except that tranquility would prevail over them, mercy would encompass them, the angels would surround them, and Allaah would make a mention of them in the presence of those near Him (angels).” [Muslim]

The Delight of the Heart

Delivered in al-Masjid Al-Haram during the Month of Ramadan.
Imam Sa‘ud bin Ibrahim Ash-Shuriem
Translated by Yahya Adel Ibrahim

Praise is for Allah, the Guide to goodness. He Watches over His creation, knowing what is hidden from sight and that which they conceal in their breasts. I praise Him, the praise of a true slave who is afraid of His punishment, yet in hope of His forgiveness. I thank Him; the thanking that is obligated on a slave to his Master. I bear witness that there is no God or deity worthy of any worship except Allah alone. I bear witness that Muhammed is His slave and final Messenger.

Amma Ba‘du:

I advise you and I to have Taqwa Allah; it is the provision that will be most beneficial on the final Day.

Allah (SW) says Ordering his Prophet (saaw):

“Recite (O Muhammed) what has been revealed to you of the Book (Quran), and perform as-Salah. Verily, as-Salah (prayer) prevents from al-Fahsha’ (great sins of every kind) and al-Munkar (disbelief, and every wicked deed). And the Remembering (praising) of (you by) Allah (in front of the angels) is greater indeed [than your remembering (praising) Allah in prayers]. And Allah knows what you do.” Al-‘
Ankabut 29:45

He (SW) also said:

“I (Muhammed) have been commanded only to worship the Lord of this city (Makkah), Him Who has sanctified it and His is everything. And I am commanded to be from among the Muslims (those who submit to Allah in Islam). And to recite the Quran.” An-Naml 27:91,92

Allah (SW) said:

“Nay, but they, the clear Ayat [the description and the qualities of Prophet Muhammed (saaw) written like verses in the Torah and the Gospel] are preserved in the breasts of those who are have been given knowledge (from the people of the Scriptures). And none but the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers…) deny Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons and signs).”
Al-‘Ankabut 29:49

He (SW) also said:

“And we have indeed made the Quran easy to understand and be remembered, then is there any that will remember (or receive admonition)?” Al-Qamar 54:17

‘Ibad Allah!

The month of Ramadan is known as the month of sacrifice and fasting. It is also known and recognized and known as the month of the Quran. Allah (SW) says:

“The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong).” Al-Baqarah 2:185

Allah (SW) says:

"Verily! We have sent it down in the Night of Al-Qadr (Decree).” Al-Qadr 97:1

He (SW) also says:

“We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [night of Qadr in the 9th month (Ramadan) of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. Therein (that night is decreed every matter of ordainments.” Ad-Dukhan 44:3

Allah revealed the Quran, a beacon of light that cannot be extinguished. A methodology and way of life that is perfect in all respect. In it is strength that cannot be equaled or repelled. It is the foundation of Iman and the spring of knowledge. Allah Willed that the Quran be what quenches the thirst for knowledge. It is the delight of the people of wisdom. The Quran is the greatest cure for all ailments. The Quran is Allah’s Rope that cannot be severed. It is the Wise reminder and the truly straight path. In the Quran are the parables of those who were before us, a prophesy of that which will be after us and a criterion to judge between us. It is Truth with certainty that was revealed to us. The one who lives according to its dictation will be rewarded. The one who judges according to it will be just. The one who calls to it is on the straight path. Allah raises and lowers people with it. The Quran, on the Day of Judgment, will intercede on behalf of those who recited it.

Rasool ul Allah (saaw) said:

The one who reads a single letter from the Book of Allah will be rewarded with one Hasana (good deed). (Know that) A good deed is multiplied ten times over. I do not say Alif Lam Meem is one letter. Verily, Alif is on letter, Lam is one letter, Meem is one letter.” Reported by at-Tirmithi and it is Sahih.

O Muslims!

The Book of Allah to mankind’s guidance, is like the soul in relation to the body. Therefore, he who abandons its recitation and does not act in accordance to its laws is in a state of spiritual death. Allah (SW) says:

“Is he who was dead (without Faith by ignorance and disbelief) and We gave him life (by Knowledge and Faith) and set for him a light (of Belief) whereby he can walk amongst men, like him who is in the darkness (of disbelief, polytheism and hypocrisy) from which he can never come out?” Al-An‘am
6:122

A person without Quran is like a person without water, air and medicine. Allah (SW) says:

“And We send down from the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe.” Al-Isra’ 17:82

Allah (SW) also says:

“And if We had sent this as a Quran in a foreign language other that Arabic, they would have said: ‘Why are not its Verses explained in detail (in our language)? What! (A Book) not in Arabic and (the Messenger) an Arab? Say: ‘It is for those who believe, a guide and healing. And as for those who disbelieve, there is heaviness (deafness) in their ears, and it (the Quran) is blindness for them.”
Fussilat 41:44

The Quran is a healing for the body and soul. Whenever life becomes hard and complicated the Light of the Quran will always brighten the way. It will be a source of solace and tranquility. It will be a defender to you when you are powerless and in need. Allah (SW) says:

“And when you (Muhammed) recite the Quran, We put between you and those who believe not in the Hereafter, an invisible veil (or screen their hearts, so they hear or understand it not).”

“And We have put a barrier before them, a barrier behind them, and We have covered them up, so that they cannot see.”
Ya-Sin 36:9

The Muslim recites the Quran and will feel the Sakina and tranquility in his heart and being. This causes them only to fear Allah alone and no other.

Allah (SW) says:

“Those (the believers) unto whom the people (hypocrites) said, ‘Verily, the people (pagans) have gathered against you (a great army), therefore, fear them.” But it (only) increased them in Faith, and they said, ‘Allah (alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us).” So they returned with Grace and Bounty from Allah. No harm touched them; and they followed the good Pleasure of Allah. And Allah is the Owner of Great Bounty. It is only Shaytan that suggests to you the fear of his Auliya [supporters and friends (polytheists, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah and in His Messenger], so fear them not, but fear Me, if you are (true) believers.” Ali-‘Imran 3:173-175

Sadly, many have taken this Quran for granted and have neglected its recitation and implementation. They sought the worldly life and neglected the Hereafter. Allah (SW) says:

“And if you obey most of those on earth, they will mislead you far away from Allah’s Path. They follow nothing but conjectures, and they do nothing but lie.” Al-An‘am 6:116

Allah (SW) says:

“And most of them follow nothing but conjecture. Certainly, conjecture can be of no avail against the truth.” Yunus 10:36

The people of disbelief try to cloud the beauty of the Quran by attempting to beautify their scientific endeavors and worldly possessions. Yet, Allah (SW) says:

“They know only the outside appearance of the life of the world (i.e. the matters of their livelihood, like irrigating or sowing or reaping), and they are heedless of the Hereafter.” Ar-Rum 30:7

Tragically, there are those who will recite the Quran in its entirety and finish with little more than with what they began with in terms of contemplation and action. Some are so concerned with how they sound, they beautify their voice without ever listening to what is being ordered or prohibited. Truly there are many reciters of the Quran that the Quran is free from them and their evil. They recite the Quran and are oppressive to themselves and others by not following its orders or forbidding its prohibitions. Allah (SW) says:

“No doubt! The Curse of Allah is on the Zalimun (wrong-doers).” Hud 11:18

He (SW) says:

“Then pray and invoke (sincerely) the Curse of Allah upon those who lie.” Ali-‘Imran 3:61

O Muslims!

Nothing is more valuable to a Muslim in his worldly life and in the Hereafter than reciting the Quran and reflecting and trying to comprehend its meaning. In doing so an individual will become acquainted with what is good and what is evil. He will see the effects of disobedience of Allah and its punishment in the parables of those who have come before us. An example of such a punishment is the flood that was sent upon the people of Nuh (AS) and others similar to it. It is a source of inspiration and strengthens one’s belief in Allah. For this reason, Allah (SW) says:

“And when His (Allah’s) Verses (this Quran) are recited unto them, they (Verses) increase their Faith; and they put their trust in their Lord.” Al-Anfal 8:2

This Book was sent and revealed from above the seven Heavens so that it could be comprehended and implemented, it is not just to be recited while the heart is pre-occupied. Allah (SW) says:

“(This is) a Book (Quran) which We have sent down to you, full of blessings that they may ponder over its Verses, and that men of understanding may remember.” Sad 38:29

Allah (SW) says:

“Have they not pondered over the Word (of Allah) or has there come to them what had not come to their fathers of old?” Al-Mu’minun 23:68

Allah (SW) says:

“Do they not then consider the Quran carefully? Had it been from other than Allah, they would surely have found therein much contradictions.” An-Nisa 4:82

He (SW) says:

“Do they not think deeply in the Quran, or are their hearts locked up (from understanding it)? Muhammed 47:24

The Quran is an integral part of the Muslim individual’s life. Allah (SW) says:

“Has not the time come for the hearts of those who believe to be affected by Allah’s Reminder (Quran)? And that which has been revealed of the truth, lest they become as those who received the Scripture before (Jews and Christians), and the term was prolonged on them and so their hearts were hardened? And many of them were Fasiqun (rebelious, disobedient to Allah).” Al-Hadid 57:16

What has happened to our hearts O ‘Ibad Allah? Why are our hearts locked out and unresponsive to the Quran? Why do the words enter from one ear and exit out the other. Why have our hearts hardened?

Let us comprehend the Quran and implement it in our lives. Let us be from those who implement the Quran in our days and recite it during our nights.

O Allah! Make the Quran the delight of our hearts and the light of our breasts and the remover of our pain, sorrow and discomfort.

Children involving in the Recitation of Qur'an

By Humaira

“Verily, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'ân in order that you may understand. We relate unto you (Muhammad SAW) the best of stories through Our Revelations unto you, of this Qur'ân. And before this (i.e. before the coming of Divine Revelation to you), you were among those who knew nothing about it (the Qur'ân) “[12: 1-3]

Hiba was a bright kid, fond of reading books, and now that her summer holidays had begun, she was excited about getting to read other books.

She found a shelf in which her mother kept the different kind of books. She had discovered it long before, but was too busy with school work and Quran lessons to sit down and read them.
One day she asked her mother if she could go and get a book from the shelf to read.

`Yes, of course.’Amina answered as she was cooking something in the kitchen.

Hiba quickly went in, grabbed a story book and began reading.

Amina had already read that book; it was a story of a beautiful princess who had got transformed into a monkey by some jinn and a prince found her... In short - a castle in the air that wouldn’t have done any good to Hiba. Well enough, Amina thought it was a waste of time for her daughter to read such stories. In fact, she wanted her daughter to read the Holy Quran, but when she saw the interest of her daughter in that book she let her read, and decided to deal with it another day.

Only for the next two days Hiba was found with the story book, after which she lost interest in it.

Where is your book, Hiba?’

‘I finished reading it’- answered Hiba.

`And did you like the story?’

`No mama, I didn’t quite  like it.’

Amina was surprised how her daughter didn’t find the book interesting although it was appropriate for her age - something most kids would love reading.

'I don’t know Mama...but I didn’t enjoy reading it.’

Amina was actually relieved to hear that from her daughter. She asked Hiba,`Should I then show you a book that has beautiful stories, you would enjoy reading?’

Hiba anxiously replied that she would love to.

Amina gave her the Holy Quran.

SubhanAllah! Hiba opened it. Her little hands were holding onto the Qur’an so tightly...

Amina was constantly making du’a: “Oh Allah, may my children always hold on to the Qur’an and gain benefit and guidance from it - Ameen”

Hiba’s curiosity bursted... `Mama, where should I start from?’

`Surah Ash-Shuara, chapter 26 tells the story of Prophet Musa, peace be upon him. It is a very beautiful chapter and we can together read it and learn a lot from it.’

Amina opened Surah Ash-Shuara and made Hiba read it.

Hiba eventually got so engrossed  reading that she forgot what was going around her.

Amina sighed with a relief. AlhamduLillah! She went back to the kitchen to finish what she was doing.

After a while, Amina asked Hiba, “So did you like reading the Qur’an?”

`Yes mama, very much!’ she replied.

Amina then told her, “when I was a kid and had started reading the Qur’an, I also felt the same. It is indeed interesting and is a guide, which when followed, makes us the best of human beings...’

Hiba told her mother the story she read and both of them discussed the events and the characters.

"We send down (stage by stage) in the Qur'an that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe: to the unjust it causes nothing but loss after loss." [17:82]

Indeed...the Qur’an is guidance,Wisdom, Strength, Healing, Mercy and lot more, for those who read it and follow it so why delay? Let our children hold it and read it until it becomes the life of their souls and the light of their hearts.

The prophet (peace be upon him) used to seek Allah’s protection for Al-Hasan and Al-Husain by saying to them: “I seek protection for you in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every beast, and from every envious blameworthy eye” – Al-Bukhari 4/119

The Challenge

Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips

The Qur’aan is not only unique in the way in which it presents its subject matter, but it is also unique in that it is a miracle itself. By the term "miracle," we mean the performance of a supernatural or extraordinary event which cannot be duplicated by humans. It has been documented that Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) challenged the Arabs to produce a literary work of a similar caliber as the Qur'aan, but they were unable to do so in spite of their well-known eloquence and literary powers. The challenge to reproduce the Qur'aan was presented to the Arabs and mankind in three stages:

l. The Whole Qur'aan:

In the Qur'aan, Allaah commanded the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) to challenge all of creation to create a book of the stature of the Qur'aan,

"Say: 'If all mankind and the jinn would come together to produce the like of this Qur’aan, they could not produce its like even though they exerted all and their strength in aiding one another.’" [Soorah al-Israa’ (17):88]

2. Ten Soorahs:

Next, Allaah made the challenge ostensibly easier by asking those who denied its divine origin to imitate even ten soorahs of the Qur’aan:

"Or do they say that he has invented it? Say (to them), 'Bring ten invented soorahs like it, and call (for help) on whomever you can besides Allaah, if you are truthful." [Soorah Hood (11):13]

This final challenge was to produce even a single soorah to match what is in the Qur’aan, whose shortest soorah, al-Kawthar, consists of only three verses:

"And if you all are in doubt about what I have revealed to My servant, bring a single soorah like it, and call your witnesses besides Allaah if you are truthful." [Soorah al-Baqarah (2):23]

These challenges were not just empty words with no one caring to prove them wrong. Prophet Muhammad’s (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) call to monotheism, to the abolition of idolatry in all its forms, and to the equality of slaves and their masters threatened the whole socio-economic framework of Makkah society in general, and the position of the ruling Qurayshee tribe from which the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) came in particular. Makkah, the trading center of Arabia, as well as its spiritual center, desperately wanted to stop the spread of Islaam. Yet all that the Prophet’s opponents had to do to crush the movement was to make up a single soorah like any one of those which the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) and his followers were reciting to the people. A number of Qurayshee orators and poets tried to imitate the Qur'aan, but they failed. They then resorted to offering him vast amounts of wealth, the position of king over them, and the most noble and beautiful of their women in exchange for his promise to stop inviting people to Islaam. He responded to them by reciting the first thirteen verses of Soorah Fussilat, until they asked him to stop. [Collected by al-Haakim, al-Bayhaqee, Aboo Ya'laa and Ibn Hishaam, and declared hasan by lbraaheem al-'Alee in Saheeh as-Seerah an-Nabaweeyah, p.64.] The Quraysh also resorted to torturing their slaves and relatives who had embraced Islaam in a vain attempt to cause them to revert to paganism. Later they organized an economic boycott against the Prophet his followers and the members of his clan, Banoo Haashim, in an attempt to starve them into submission. But even this plan eventually failed. Finally, they plotted to kill him in his home by sending armed young men from each of the clans of Quraysh in order that the guilt of his murder be shared by all the clans, making revenge by the Prophet's clan impossible.

However, Allaah enabled the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) and his followers to flee Makkah and join a new band of converts who had arisen among the tribes of a city to the north called Yathrib. Islaam spread rapidly through the clans of Yathrib, and within a year Muslims became the city's majority. Prophet Muhammad was then made the ruler, and the name of the city was changed to Madeenah an-Nabee (The City of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam), which was then shortened to "Madeenah." Over the next eight years, the clans of Makkah and its neighboring lands mounted a series of unsuccessful battle campaigns against the emerging Muslim state in Madeenah, which ended with the Muslim invasion of Makkah itself.

All of this bloodshed could have been avoided if only the Quraysh and their allies had been able to produce a mere three lines of poetry or flowing prose similar to the shortest soorah of the Qur'aan. Hence, there can be no doubt about the inimitability of the Qur'aan's literary style, about the miracle of its rhyme and the marvel of its rhythm.

It has been suggested that the inimitability of the Qur'aan is not necessarily unique, for great English poets like Shakespeare, Chaucer, or great poets in any language tend to have distinctly unique styles which set them apart from their contemporaries. However, if, for example, some leading poet of today were to make an in-depth study of Shakespeare's writings and write a sonnet in Shakespeare's style in old ink and on old paper, then claim that he had discovered a lost poem of Shakespeare's, the literary world would probably accept this claim, even after careful study. Thus, even the greatest of poets could be imitated, no matter how unique his style was, just as the famous painters have been imitated. [In fact, some English scholars consider much ofwhat has been attributedto Shakespeare to have been written by his contemporary, Christopher Marlowe.] The Qur'aan, however, is way above this level, as attempts to forge chapters have been made throughout the ages, yet none has withstood close scrutiny. And, as was mentioned before, the incentive to imitate the Qur'aan was more intense during the time of its revelation when literally skills were at their peak than at any other time, yet there was no successful attempt.
